Sunday Sonnet!

As yonder years expectant maid with child,
Accompanied by older pledged betrothed,
Advanced on weary course with manner mild,
Today, believers, in their faith beclothed,
In advent seek their persons to prepare,
To celebrate the nascence of their lord;
A time for still reflection and of prayer,
That blessings on all beings might be poured;
Be mindful of the chasmic, sad divides
In station, stature, heritage and wealth,
The need for saintly love in all resides,
The gift of the Divine is wholesome health;
May advent hope pervade each living soul,
That brokenness in all may be made whole.

Beset by wilful demons of delight,
Two tiny tods of sniggering childhood imps
Indulge their trip into fantasmal flight,
While chattering foursome, sullen adult whimps,
Lament events in gravely troubled world,
Exacerbating personal state of stress;
So little is achieved with brickbats hurled,
Futility of toil is served, no less.
Shall ever human kind revert to sense,
A cry, so often heard abroad these days,
Shall ever vulnerable secure defence,
Lest equity into oblivion gaze?
Some find themselves so far removed from Care,
Even beyond the reach of distant Prayer!

The even tenor of the chanted psalms
Induces penetrating atmosphere,
Alleviating all invasive qualms,
A haven for those vulnerable to fear;
Embraced by burgeoning cloud of frankincense,
Sweet concomitant wave of yearning prayer,
The penitent is bared of all pretence,
In expectation of Elysian Care;
A troubled spirit, searching for some space,
Needs not withdraw to hidden, secret cove,
Arrange, instead, a visit to this place,
Here, to experience redemptive love.
In quietude, the still small voice is heard,
In ambience, fair, forsaken faith is stirred!

Then came a gentle whisper on the wind,
Angelic in its velvet undertone,
Like magical ethereal wunderkind,
Emerging from a faraway unknown:
‘What ails your troubled spirit, now? she asked,
And brushed my furrowed forehead with a kiss;
Leaving my meek, defenceless mien unmasked,
Her touch seduced me share what was amiss;
‘Confounded by Tomorrow’s dark unknown,
Deception would my hapless thoughts assail!’
In soft, mellifluous chords her voice intoned:
‘Distracted mind of ancient wit avail –
From shackles of disquietude walk free,
What is to be, Good Grace shall oversee!’

🦋

In preparation for the festal day
That marks when their Emmanuel was born,
With fervent prayer and lights in rich array,
Devoted faithful hearts and homes adorn;
The masses, though, in their pursuit of fun,
Seduced by tinselled sirens’ cunning lure,
Unspoken quest forever leave undone,
The empty, deeper human need to cure;
And yet, unearned, tidings of grace abide
Within the carols, sung by one and all,
That lack of joy and peace shall none betide,
Until the world at large be held in thrall.
Hail Grace, emergent from virginal womb,
To Grace, emergent from unfettered tomb.
