Sunday Sonnet!

How free are we to think whate’er we wish?
How free are we to speak our every thought?
Are these two luxuries the self-same dish?
Is supping freely not with danger fraught?
What room be there for decent human mores,
When selfishness decries the common cause,
And harbingers of ill constraint deplores?
Concern for others’ needs, no time to pause!
Licentious exercise of thought and speech
Imperils liberties and harmony,
Goodwill from our relationships shall leach,
Exposing vulnerable to villainy.
Freedom to think and then to speak your mind,
Precludes not obligation to be kind!

Can Reason supersede blind Ignorance?
Can Daylight intervene where Night prevails?
How shall the Truth to waking blind evince
Unless untold disaster it entails?
How brutally perverse must Power be
Before the God of Justice intercedes?
Is this the end to Land of Liberty?
A culture, vile, that revolution breeds?
Nay! See within the Nation’s marrow set,
Enduring mores bequeathed by sage forebears;
Would that these tenets People ne’er forget,
To honour them allays all future fears;
Let Hearts of Courage untowards assail,
That Spirit of Democracy prevail!

Flight of Thoughts (WP)

🦋

Into seductive, beck’ning far beyond,
Creative thoughts of fancy take their flight,
Like famished vultures to their prey respond,
They hasten to their realm of sheer delight;
Reflections from the past impulses feed,
Abandon casting caution to the breeze,
Distraction not allowed to slacken speed,
No senseless intervention, if you please;
Alas, ’tis in the nature of a dream,
Completely unpredictable to be,
Converting appetising Devon cream
Into distasteful, curdling whey with glee;
For flighty thoughts your heart to fill with grace,
Let reverie reality embrace!

Sunday Sonnet!

Alone she sat disconsolately bowed,
Her customary calm demeanour strained;
Allegiance to Sophia disavowed,
Her credibility now sadly stained;
Distorted images of Truth abound,
Supplanted by intrigue of cunning Lies;
No greater fear can villainy compound
Than other human beings demonise;
Democracy, deflowered by Deceit,
Forever bears the scars of deep distrust,
Yet, Faith must not surrender in defeat,
For Hope shall be restored to all the Just;
Fraternity her mettle needs avail,
Equality shall in the end prevail!

When I of mortal treadmill take my leave,
A destiny no being can escape –
However much some would themselves deceive,
Or others, Fate’s arrival would reshape –
All what-has-beens form part of who I am,
Be they of scaling hills or sliding downs,
Even when level living seemed a sham,
Or future promise be replete with crowns;
For what has gone before or what shall be,
Much not unduly spiced with deep regret,
Rich blessings from above shall set me free,
And lessons learnt I never shall forget;
We grow with every modicum of breath,
From birth, through life, until embraced by death!
