Sunday Sonnet!

Arresting fragrance muted crowded room,
Attention on maid at messiah’s feet,
Her tears and flowing hair his feet entombed,
Which gesture overflowed with love replete;
Such costly unction could sustain the poor,
Appalled, said he who held the common purse,
Let Be! Few can the master more adore
Save she who pending future here rehearse;
Has ever such devotion been displayed,
Or heartfelt passion bared for all to see?
Societal niceties she disobeyed,
Deigning in honesty herself to be.
Devotion from the heart on treasure spent,
Its selfless sacrifice shall ne’er lament!

Not for the sake of cultivating praise,
Nor in pursuit of serving self-esteem,
One seeks to advocate compassion’s ways,
A more humane society to redeem.
As frozen as the snow-capped countryside,
Resplendent in the sparkling noonday sun,
The mores of life in vanities reside,
Affecting attitudes of everyone.
Would that the Sun that warms the human heart,
With embers of enduring, fulsome hope,
Regenerate our mores with a new start,
That Care shall reign in comprehensive scope.
Indifference paves the way to grave’s decline,
Compassion nurtures joy for the divine.

Effusive silence gently penetrates
Obscured recesses of receptive soul,
Her wordless eloquence regenerates,
Fatigued and brokenness to be made whole;
No need there be it’s healing to access,
With zest our puny efforts to instill,
Save patient resignation to possess,
Humility aplenty, to be still!
Fear not disruptive demons of unease
Intent on obviating wholesomeness,
Embrace of blessed quietude decrees
Assurance of her sanative caress.
Imbibe the stillness of this sacred place,
An earthbound channel of redeeming grace.

How little time within each gifted day,
Distracted by seductive transient thought,
We find a word of gratitude to say
For unearned blessings freely life has brought;
Pre-occupied with matters that decay,
Fixated on pursuit of worldly wares,
Surprisingly we stop in sheer dismay,
When over-burdened with unasked-for cares;
Mere mortals would themselves disquiet save,
Were they upon true values to reflect,
And such that must desert them at the grave,
With hope-inspired confidence reject;
More wholesome be a dose of daily thanks,
Than dividend and interest from the banks.
