Sunday Sonnet!

Fear not an unknown venture to engage,
Nor let resistant doubt your hopes becloud,
Though failures past bright future would upstage
And low esteem the promising enshroud;
The coldest winds of winter oft betray
Enlivened kith and kin yon curtains drawn,
Determination faltering thoughts allay
Like burgeoning light announces ev’ry dawn;
Though dark the night of self-belief may be,
Confounded by unhelpful words around,
The Spirit opens fading sight to see
That evermore God’s grace in all abound;
Assured, faint hearts are never left alone,
When faithful venture into the unknown!

Perched high above green, open countryside,
Endowed with gifted vision so acute
That faintest faunal movement, far and wide,
Cannot escape keen eyes of taloned brute,
The martial eagle waits on rocky crag
While far below prospective prey keep watch,
No chance for their alertness e’er to flag
Lest they expose themselves to hunter’s snatch;
Apparent in this pre-destined design
Resides a rhythm of to be or not,
Regardless of a privileged bloodline,
Such vantage instantly can be forgot;
As joyful be the moment of one’s birth,
As transient be one’s sojourn here on earth.

Soft, gentle zephyrs stroke the ripening corn,
Like rhythmic, dancing wavelets on the lake,
A skylark serenades still, peaceful morn,
Invoking all and sundry to awake;
Light, measured footfalls early rambler sounds
Append the purring of a turtle dove,
Though none of these, in any way, confounds
The master songster, soaring up above;
Angelic aspects of each gifted day
Present, untried, to all discerning hearts,
Let none such generosity betray,
Lest from this earth he fruitlessly departs;
Since Nature paints a picture so divine,
Pray, may I not such graciousness decline!

Sunday Sonnet!

Spent leaf (WP)

Impassioned pleas for mercy go unheard
When stifled by insane pursuit of greed,
Compassion languishes in tomb interred
As though from thence never to be retrieved;
Enfeebled sterile voices fail to stir
Bowels of human kindness to respond,
Vain cowardice shamefacedly demur,
By compromise their dignity long conned;
Faint, haltered hope, like gentle morning breeze
Imbues new dawning day with waking life,
Deflated spirit kindles to increase
Determination to o’ercome the strife;
As fleeting be our precious time unfurled,
As transient are the values of the world.
