Sunday Sonnet!

Their innocence, a gemstone of delight,
Irradiating sparkle on one’s face,
Disarming, putting woebegone to flight,
A veritable avenue of grace;
Untinted eyes perceive the extant world,
Evoking response in untainted mind,
As though it were ensign of truth unfurled,
With no intent in heart to be unkind;
Alas, the mores of culture infiltrate
Virginal thought and speech of little ones,
Instinctual honesty to dislocate,
Preventing them from being truthful scions.
Embedded in the deeper consciousness,
Resides the need to speak the truth, no less.

Not for the sake of cultivating praise,
Nor in pursuit of serving self-esteem,
One seeks to advocate compassion’s ways,
A more humane society to redeem.
As frozen as the snow-capped countryside,
Resplendent in the sparkling noonday sun,
The mores of life in vanities reside,
Affecting attitudes of everyone.
Would that the Sun that warms the human heart,
With embers of enduring, fulsome hope,
Regenerate our mores with a new start,
That Care shall reign in comprehensive scope.
Indifference paves the way to grave’s decline,
Compassion nurtures joy for the divine.

How free are we to think whate’er we wish?
How free are we to speak our every thought?
Are these two luxuries the self-same dish?
Is supping freely not with danger fraught?
What room be there for decent human mores,
When selfishness decries the common cause,
And harbingers of ill constraint deplores?
Concern for others’ needs, no time to pause!
Licentious exercise of thought and speech
Imperils liberties and harmony,
Goodwill from our relationships shall leach,
Exposing vulnerable to villainy.
Freedom to think and then to speak your mind,
Precludes not obligation to be kind!
