Sunday Sonnet!

robin on branch(WP)

🦋

Tap-tapping gently on the window pain,
Red robin rouses man asleep in chair,
Who, thinking it might merely be the rain,
Bestirs, then dozes off without a care;
Insistent little redbreast taps once more,
This time with greater passion in his call,
The old man stirs, as he had done before,
Raises reluctant eyelids, narrow, small –
Two tiny eyes invade the fog of age,
Occasioning a burgeoning, happy smile;
One’s needs the other’s kindness thus engage,
To make their co-existence prove worthwhile;
No better world there ever can be known,
With reciprocity the cornerstone!

While walking on a lonely sandy beach,
Deserted, but for wavelets at my feet,
A gently rolling object, within reach,
For fleeting moment stopped, as though to greet;
It seemed the wavelets paused a little while,
Attention of my spirit to arrest,
Unconsciously, I stopped and flashed a smile,
Which to an innate pleasure did attest;
From whence came such delight I cannot tell,
Though that it did, I never can deny,
From deep within unconsciousness upwell,
Its authenticity let none decry;
Such mystic moments reverie surprise,
Not often, nor so easy to reprise!

🎀

Too soon the Winter sun in western sky
Declines, as though in fear of pending Night,
So little time for aged to say ‘Hi’,
Their darkened spirits to be filled with light;
Restricted to the friendship of four walls,
By ruthless limitations of old age,
Vicissitude of Winter’s whim forestalls
The yearning heart, fair weather to engage;
O, that the warm embrace of Summer’s sun,
The cold, dark days of Snow Queen would displace,
A brighter mien to bring to everyone,
And smiles return to every sullen face.
Pray, tarry not much longer Blessed Spring,
Great harbinger of joy for all to sing!

Let not a thoughtless word your lips depart,
For none its consequences can foretell,
The vulnerable and sensitive may smart,
While others, more reactive, may rebel,
Provoking unpredictable retorts,
Like poisoned arrows, pierce a fragile heart,
Wiser, instead, those thoughts to turn around,
Commending them to scrutiny of grace;
Then amity is certain to resound,
Effecting pleasant smiles on every face;
Too often words uncensored foul the air,
Too often hapless languish in despair.
