Sunday Sonnet!

IMG_3931(WP)

🎄

Awash with mesmerising coloured lights,
Resounding with enduring festive song,
The malls of mammon, teeming with delights,
Seductive to the pleasure-seeking throng;
From babe in arms to grey-haired doddering dad,
With little or with surfeit wherewithal,
Whether in velvet or in sackcloth clad,
Perennial mystery holds all in thrall;
Yet few in faith hold feast in close embrace,
While most succumb to man’s insidious greed;
Would that good sense such madness could replace,
Then Jubilate Deum might succeed.
Prodigal grace to creatures all extends,
Pernicious recompense for none commends.

As year pursues each year into old age,
Our limitations grow in limb and mind,
Sometimes with thoughts from life to disengage,
Good grace adjures, to gratitude be kind;
Delight of halcyon days in summer sun,
Distress when buffeted by winter storm,
Each gifted season proffers everyone
An opportune, their living to perform;
Some traverse rough terrain in their pursuits,
While others savour privileged advance,
All shall inherit designated fruits,
None can the fated levelling end enhance.
Though plenty pain in what is gone before,
Much more salubrious pleasure, to be sure.

Sunday Sonnet!

Flight of Thoughts (WP)

🦋

Into seductive, beck’ning far beyond,
Creative thoughts of fancy take their flight,
Like famished vultures to their prey respond,
They hasten to their realm of sheer delight;
Reflections from the past impulses feed,
Abandon casting caution to the breeze,
Distraction not allowed to slacken speed,
No senseless intervention, if you please;
Alas, ’tis in the nature of a dream,
Completely unpredictable to be,
Converting appetising Devon cream
Into distasteful, curdling whey with glee;
For flighty thoughts your heart to fill with grace,
Let reverie reality embrace!

Sunday Sonnet!

🎀

While walking on a lonely sandy beach,
Deserted, but for wavelets at my feet,
A gently rolling object, within reach,
For fleeting moment stopped, as though to greet;
It seemed the wavelets paused a little while,
Attention of my spirit to arrest,
Unconsciously, I stopped and flashed a smile,
Which to an innate pleasure did attest;
From whence came such delight I cannot tell,
Though that it did, I never can deny,
From deep within unconsciousness upwell,
Its authenticity let none decry;
Such mystic moments reverie surprise,
Not often, nor so easy to reprise!

Easter Sunday Sonnet!

Does Eostra flaunt her Spring fertility,
As some would tend at this time of the year,
Promoting coloured eggs all chocolaty,
Supplied in plenitude by generous hare?
Beneath such sensate pleasures there resides
A more enduring paragon of grace,
Accessible to all, with none besides,
Awaiting meek acceptance to embrace;
For devotees of Man from Nazareth,
The Queen of Festivals the heart enthrals,
Proclaiming central lodestone of their faith,
Triumphantly, with ‘Al-le-lu-ia’ calls!
From dereliction of a barren tomb,
Came forth New Life as from a fecund womb!
