Sunday Sonnet.

However high ambition seeks to reach,
However far the dream aspires to go,
Whatever limits wherewithal can breach,
Whatever depth of learning one might know,
As sure as day is followed by the night,
Or azure sky displaces heavy cloud,
Calm destiny rests not in human might,
Nor can mortality escape the shroud;
Dependent on vicissitudes of time,
Susceptible to human wear and tear,
‘Tis futile to conflict this paradigm,
As though our mere existence to forswear;
Despite all efforts Fate to oversee,
Transcendence does determine what shall be!

Above, the angry voice of Thor resounds,
Instilling mortal creatures with alarm,
Below, the noise prevailing peace confounds,
Skeltering the vulnerable to keep from harm;
None did such vulgar force anticipate,
As stillness deepened in the fading light,
Nor did preceding light’ning vitiate
The shattering impact of disabling fright;
Then pelt cascading icicles of hail
The unprotected and the unforewarned,
Like diving demons on their prey prevail,
Relentless frozen pellets mercy scorned.
Too often on the wanderings of this life,
The Hand of Fortune such events contrive!

When I of mortal treadmill take my leave,
A destiny no being can escape –
However much some would themselves deceive,
Or others, Fate’s arrival would reshape –
All what-has-beens form part of who I am,
Be they of scaling hills or sliding downs,
Even when level living seemed a sham,
Or future promise be replete with crowns;
For what has gone before or what shall be,
Much not unduly spiced with deep regret,
Rich blessings from above shall set me free,
And lessons learnt I never shall forget;
We grow with every modicum of breath,
From birth, through life, until embraced by death!

We search for endless years that niche to find,
From unrelenting meddling thoughts apart,
That ambience to inner growth resigned,
And discontent forever can depart.
Mere mortals grow accustomed to their fate,
Seduced by concrete transients for their roots;
Inclined the wiser counsel to berate,
Deferring to more palatable fruits;
Yet, deep within each selfhood there resides,
Unquenchable desire to attain
Much more, surpassing earthenware, besides,
The stuff of which endures beyond all stain,
May God his gracious gift to all decree,
That peace of ‘letting go’ and ‘letting be’!

Rictameter #1

To be,
Or not to be,
Some insight may possess,
None ever truly can assess,
Save Him who has the future in His hand;
There be no need to fear our Fate,
If we can learn to wait
Then Faith will see
To be!

Rictameter is a scheme similar to Cinquain. Starting your first line with a two syllable word, you then consecutively increase the number of syllables per line by two. i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 Then down again, 8, 6, 4, 2. Making the final line the same two syllable word you began with.
