Sunday Sonnet!

Not always do we see the blessed sun,
Or feel the cheerful presence of its balm,
Its intent by inclement climes undone,
Need not beset mere mortals with alarm;
Elsewhere the sun god sheds his golden rays,
Consistent with his quintessential being,
While here the constant hand of time conveys
We, earthlings, smile of Ra shall soon be seeing.
The rise and fall of rolling ocean waves,
Or undulation of the hills and dales,
Portray with fine panache how life behaves,
Revels of times as much as their travails.
Whatever shade of darkness be the night,
‘Tis but the absence of returning light.

Soft, gentle silence of the evening breeze,
Enhanced by intermittent blackbird’s call,
Induces sense of soporific ease,
Without the need for sunset ethanol;
Fraught day’s demands have left spirit well spent,
Surviving cutting edge of tempers frayed,
Despite appeals that reason should relent,
Lest untoward demeanour be displayed;
Rail passage cancellations morn and eve,
Arrivals late for work or not at all,
Rewarded everyone with much to grieve,
Not least with foul behaviour that appal;
Sweet stillness of relaxing garden air,
Restores one’s sanity in leisure chair.

‘Tis reassuring, most, to be aware
Of living in the ambit of God’s Grace,
Each moment that I pause to stand and stare,
Into the vast expanse of boundless space;
Then fills exultant robin tranquil air
With dulcet song, the coldest heart to warm,
Its tiny life embraced within the Care
Of Him, for whom all goodness is the norm.
From boundless sky to ocean, bottomless,
Station or stature, creature counts for naught,
Accessing Godhead’s goodwill limitless,
Save what through humble, patient trust is sought.
Seek not the morrow’s blessings e’er to see,
For all we know, the best is yet to be!

Do not the lack of sunshine e’er lament,
When pregnant clouds their bounty on earth shed,
Such blessings for our well-being are meant,
Extol with thankfulness the gift instead;
Untended go the prayers for rain elsewhere,
As parched and famished creatures, young and old,
With yearning eyes into the morrow stare,
Expectant, but of suffering untold;
Forever in the human mind persists,
Ambivalence of what is bad or good,
In heart of Mother Nature none exists,
Fostering in all a sense of brotherhood;
Prosperity bespeaks a word of thanks,
Adversity among the noble ranks.

Grand candelabra of magnolia
Illuminate small garden, hedge enclosed,
As if some visitation from afar
Were sent to render flora, all, exposed;
Resplendent hues, enriched by pristine white,
In dulcet harmony create a tune,
The most discerning eyesight to delight,
Idyllic for reposeful afternoon.
Salubrious vernal sun its rays dispense
With unselective equanimity;
Imbibe kind Nature’s sheer benevolence,
Embrace its prodigal felicity.
There is so much for senses to enjoy,
If only we would care them to employ!
